The Joint Occurrence of Earthquakes and Floods.

Abstract

This paper describes methods of computing the probability that an earthquake occurs during a period of high reservoir pool elevation. The procedure can apply to dams that are normally dry or at lower pool levels, such as flood control dams, as well as dams with significant operational pool levels. Probabilities of the joint occurrence of earthquake and flood events have been computed for a number of cases on the basis of annual risk, as well as 50- and 100-year project life risk. The use of charts and tables developed from these computations and given in the paper is subject to the restrictive assumptions stated in the text. (Author)
