Line Shapes in Laser Experiments.

Abstract

A brief review of recent developments in line shape studies using laser spectroscopy is presented. Experiments are discussed in which the absorption or emission line profiles associated with various transitions in a vapor can be used to provide useful information concerning the atomic sample being tested. In particular, ways in which collisional effects manifest themselves in line shapes are described and the manner in which collision cross section can be extracted from these line shapes is discussed. Illustrative experiments using methods of linear spectroscopy, two-photon spectroscopy and saturation spectroscopy are presented. (Author)
