Photoelastic Stress and Fracture Analysis of Two Neutron Tube Designs.

Abstract

Photoelastic stress analysis and fracture stress analysis were carried out on two-dimensional models of the cross-sections of the M5N and M19N designs of a neutron tube under axial load. Of special interest was the metal-ceramic interface, where failure had been experienced. Both types of analysis showed the M5N to be superior to the M19N for the given loading in the area of failure. Tangential stresses along the free surfaces, and mixed-mode stress intensity factors for various crack lengths along the interface are reported. (Author)
