An Analysis of Accidents Involving Towboat-Barge Combinations on Selected Inland Waterways of the United States.

Abstract

This study uses a statistical analysis approach on a computerized data base to analyze accidents involving towboat-barge combinations on the inland waterways of the United States. The main areas explored are the factors affecting the severity and the frequency of accidents. In addition, multiple regression models are used to predict the severity of towboat accidents from a set of independent accident variables. Conclusions and recommendations are given on towboat accidents and on marine accident data collection and analysis. (Author)
