A Comparison of Sea Surface Temperature Maps Covering the Eastern Indian Ocean.

Abstract

Maps presented in three recently published Atlases, showing the sea surface temperature of the Eastern Indian Ocean, are compared. The Atlases are the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Atlas (1967); the World Ocean Atlas, Vol. I (1976); and the World Ocean Atlas, Vol. II (1977). The SST given by each atlas differed from that given by the other two atlases by up to 2 C. The SST maps in the World Ocean Atlas, Vol. II (1977) appear to be based on the most comprehensive and recent data, hence are probably the most reliable. (Author)
