Relationship between Ms and mb for Small Earthquakes in Uzbekistan, USSR

Abstract

The SRO station MAIO was used to obtain many measurements of P sub and LR from a sequence of aftershocks at Gazli, Uzbekistan in 1976, at a distance of 576 km. SP periods and amplitudes are analyzed to obtain the proper distance correction factor to yield m sub b. Eighteen events are measured to give an M sub s range 2.2 to 3.6, and m sub b range 3.6 to 5.0. The observations support the postulation that delta M sub s/delta M sub b is approximately equal 1 to at low magnitudes. The Gazli population overlaps a Eurasian teleseismic population, and is believed to be free of large error in determination of M sub s and m sub b.
