National Dam Safety Program. Wappingers Falls Dam (I.D. Number N.Y. 3, D.E.C. 613A), Hudson River Basin, Dutchess County, New York. Phase 1 Inspection Report
Abstract
This report provides information and analysis on the physical condition of the dam as of the report date. Information and analysis are based on visual inspection of the dam by the performing organization. The examination of documents and the visual inspection of Wappingers Falls Dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies which require further investigations and remedial actions. It is recommended that within 3 months of notification to the owner, a detailed hydrological and hydraulic investigations be undertaken to more accurately determine the site specific characteristics of the watershed and their affect upon the overtopping potential of the dam. At the same time structural stability analysis of the dam should be performed. Within twelve (12) months of the date of notification to the owner, any modification to the structure deemed necessary as a result of investigations, to achieve a spillway capacity adequate to discharge the outflow from at least one-half PMF should have been completed. In the interim, a detailed emergency operation plan and warning system should be promptly developed. Also, during periods of unusually heavy precipitation, around-the-clock surveillance should be provided. In addition, the dam has a number of problem areas which, if left uncorrected, have the potential for the development of hazardous conditions and must be corrected within twelve (12) months.
