On the Interpretation of Error Contours

Abstract

Although frequently encountered in engineering problems, the meaning of error contours has been the subject of much debate and confusion among engineers. This report attempts to clarify this situation by developing results from first principals without rigorous derivation. While the material presented here may be well known among a miniscule clique of theorists, it appears that this exposition is required by the engineering community.
