On the Eigenvalues of 2nd Order Elliptic Difference Operators.

Abstract

This work is motivated by the desire to extend the theory of iterative methods for the solution of the algebraic problems associated with L sub h, a finite difference operator. For this reason the operators N sub h will approximate N in a relatively 'weak' manner. In order to simplify the presentation we first consider a particular 'model' problem. Following that development we discuss the essential features of that discussion. Also described are the basic model problem and some well-known facts about this model problem. The convergence theorems are developed and ideas in our convergence proofs and their possible extension to more general problems are discussed.
