Flux Shielded Welding of Titanium.
Abstract
This is the third annual report of studies concerned primarily with submerged arc welding of titanium. During the current period studies have been directed toward recycling fluxes as a means of reducing costs, modification of flux chemistries to improve operating properties, the physics of enhanced weld penetration in the presence of fluxes and a brief evaluation of newly available Soviet literature on the subject. The recycling efforts have been unsuccessful; however, a new purification process which may simplify the procedure has been proposed but has not been tested. Modifications to the flux chemistry confirm that the cation activity of the flux is the primary factor contributing to oxygen refining capacity. The tests of enhanced weld penetration are as yet inconclusive. (Author)
