Stress Assisted Transformation in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al.

Abstract

A stress assisted, or stress-induced reaction, is reported in the beta-Ti alloy - Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al. Both X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy are used to identify the products. The results indicate the product to be predominantly orthorhombic martensite (alpha double prime), with some mechanical twins. The structural nature of the beta yields alpha double prime transformation is discussed. The effects of the beta yields alpha double prime reaction upon mechanical properties is also discussed.
