A Study of Adaptive Image Compression Techniques.

Abstract

This is a final report on the investigation of adaptive bit algorithm concepts for video image compression. Adaptive bit algorithms, using differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) and the discrete cosine transformation (DCT) with root mean squared (rms) error as a performance criterion have been derived using analytical and experimental procedures. The resulting algorithms have been implemented via software programs and their performance assessed via comparisons with fixed bit assignment procedures. Results are presented in quantitative form (i.e. rms error) as well as visual quality. (Author)
