The U. S. Air Force Academy Solar Energy Research Project Summary Report.

Abstract

This report summarizes the solar energy research which was conducted by the U.S. Air Force Academy from April 1975 to January 1980. This research consisted of investigations on a retrofit space heating system which was installed on a typical Military Family Housing (MFH) unit. This summary uses a lessons learned and designer tips approach in its discussion of the solar system's operation. This discussion is organized around the many areas of solar technology which were investigated during the course of this project. Those major areas were energy conservation effects, solar collectors, thermal storage, control systems, Thermography studies, performance comparision to a design model, and homeowner and maintenance manual development. A thermal performance summary of the solar system is also presented. The report concludes with numerous recommendations regarding policy initiatives which the Air Force should take to foster conversion to solar technology. (Author)
