The Development of an Interest-Based Guidance Profile for Use in Academic Counseling,
Abstract
In June 1978, the Dean of the Academic Board requested that the Office of the Director of Institutional Research (ODIR) initiate a research project to develop techniques for providing objective guidance measures to assist cadets in the selection of their area of concentration. ODIR report 79-006 documented the results of the initial study. The current report documents the changes that were made to produce an operational system that was used in the academic counseling for the area of concentration/field of study selection for the USMA Class of 1982. The report describes in lay terms the procedures used to develop the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory-based profiles used in the counseling sessions. More complete technical documentation is available at ODIR. The report also discusses some of the problems encountered and summarizes the conclusions and recommendations which have been made to the Dean and the DIR. An important recommendation, which has been approved, is to continue to refine the academic counseling system and produce interest-based profiles for the Class of 1983. (Author)
