Abstract

Protected species in Utah, Nevada, Texas and New Mexico can be divided into six functional categories of protection or other regulation under state and federal laws. These categories are (1) federally listed threatened and endangered (protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and amendments), (2) state-listed threatened and endangered (protected by state laws), (3) federally protected (under other federal laws, (4) state-protected (under other state laws), (5) game and furbearing, and (6) unprotected but rare.
