Preparation and Electronic Properties of Several Members of the System Fe(x/3)Nb(2x/3)Ti(1-x)O2.

Abstract

Members of the series Fe(x/3)Nb(2x/3)Ti(1-x)O2 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) were synthesized and their electrical and magnetic properties studied. Powder diffraction patterns of the products could be indexed on the basis of a tetragonal rutile unit cell. Measurements of sintered discs at 300K gave resistivity values of the order of 1,000,000 ohm-cm. Magnetic susceptibility studies lead to an assignment of Fe(x/3)(3+)Nb(2x/3)(5+)Ti(x/3)(3+) Ti(1-4x/3)(4+)O2 for the formal valencies of the ions. It appears that the observed high resistivity is the result of disordering of the ions in the rutile structure.
