Methodological Issues in Research on Reading Text with Illustrations.

Abstract

This report presents a critical review of past research which investigated the effects of illustration on readers' comprehension of instructional materials. The review includes a discussion of serious flaws in this body of research, and stresses the need for precise specification of the information content of both pictures and text. Several theories of perception and comprehension are then discussed in order to place the research into a broader theoretical context; a method for identifying and controlling the information content, based on Fredricksen's (1975) semantic analysis procedure, is described.
