Environmental Impact Assessment. Overall Training Mission, Fort Chaffee, Arkansas,

Abstract

Installation provides facilities and support training of National Guard, Army Reserve Units, Marine and Navy reservists, Air National Guard units and Reserve Officer Training Corps; and, training is the major use of the land and facilities. Pest control and fire protection are provided. There are no post cemeteries. Three large lakes that have surface areas of 177 acres are here; and various creeks provide other excellent quality, but there are occasional dust problems. There are some water pollution problems, but they do not contribute significantly to the pollution load of the local waters. Track and wheeled vehicles of training units contribute to soil erosion as does construction activities. Fort Chaffee has an impact on the region's economy and population. There are many recreational activities in and near the facility. The method in which lands have resulted in its general improvement. (Author)
