Management Practices, Environmental Characteristics and Organizational Performance.

Abstract

Organization performance was investigated as a function of internal organization characteristics and local external environmental factors. Aggregate employee ratings from 2540 people in 19 homogenous retail stores were found to be significantly correlated with objective measures of profit, sales per employee, and turnover rate. Community buying power and unemployment rate also correlated with these performance measures. The importance of internal management practices for unit performance is discussed. The need to consider performance in the context of demands, opportunities and constraints also is articulated. (Author)
