Development of the U.S. Woodland Battle Dress Uniform

Abstract

This report describes the development of the Woodland camouflage pattern for the new US Army Battle Dress system. Guidance derived from combat experience, field trials and visual science is described. Rationale is given for selection of the fabric and specific pattern design, including the individual elements of color, infrared reflectance, and pattern size. Also described are the colormetric and infrared properties of the standards selected and estimates of range of effectiveness from visual science. Dyeing and printing technology and relevant specifications are cited in the Appendix. (Author)
