The Physiological Bases for Microbial Barotolerance.
Abstract
The long-range goals of our barophysiology program are to define the bases for differences in barotolerance among microorganisms in terms of the pressure sensitivities of specific biochemical or physiological processes and to explore ways to use pressure advantageously in basic and applied microbiology. These goals have been expanded somewhat to include acquisition of knowledge of the mechanisms by which high-pressure gases affect cell growth. The report is divided into two main sections describing progress in the study of the effects of compressed gases and other narcotic agents and progress in the program on the biological effects of hydrostatic pressure.
