Auroral X-Ray Contamination of the Low Energy Proton Spectrometer on the S3-2 Satellite in the Polar Regions.

Abstract

The Low Energy Proton Spectrometer (LEPS) on board the Air Force S3-2 polar orbiting satellite recorded, at polar latitudes, high anomalous counts coming from the auroral zone direction, over the December 1975 through April 1976 operational period. Despite the low sensitivity of the Si(Li) LEPS detector to X-rays, bremsstrahlung from precipitating electrons in the hundred keV energy range is given as the source of these observations.
