Ion-Ion Neutralization.

Abstract

The results are described from two aspects of the programme. A Coordinated Selected Ion Flow Tube (SIFT) and Flowing Afterglow/Langmuir Probe (FALP) study of switching and ion-ion neutralization reactions of several stratospheric ions. It is shown that CH3CN is a viable candidate for molecule X in the recently observed stratospheric ions H(+)(H2O)(n)X(m) and that their neutralization rate coefficients are similar to those for mesospheric cluster ions. A study of the collision enhancement in helium of two ion-ion neutralization rate coefficients, alpha 2', in the pressure range 0.5 to 8 Torr. Alpha 2' is seen to increase more rapidly with pressure than expected from previous high pressure data. Estimates are made of the appropriate values for alpha 2' in the stratosphere. (Author)
