Fiber Optic Couplers

Abstract

A planar technology has been developed for fabrication of passive couplers for use in multimode fiber optics. Ion exchange from fused electrolytes has been used for waveguide fabrication using photolithography for pattern definition. Techniques are described for optimizing the throughput of the coupling device when terminated with commercial multimode optical fibers. Couplers have been fabricated in T, Y and star configurations.
