Rapid Response Density Probe Fabrication and Testing

Abstract

A new air density-measuring probe has been manufactured and tested. The measurement technique is based upon measurement of the energy decay of radioactive alpha particles as they traverse through the air. The probe consists of an alpha particle source, a detector, and signal-processing electronics. The system is designed to measure high-frequency (up to 20 kHz) density fluctuations as well as mean density. Testing was performed using a low-speed heated jet. Accurate mean density measurements were demonstrated. However, noise in the processing electronics prevented accurate unsteady readings.
