Method for Computation of Structural Failure Probability for an Aircraft

Abstract

This report describes a procedure for computing the probability of aircraft failure of a given aircraft type as a function of flight time. Specifically, the single flight probability of failure, the aircraft probability of failure after a given number of flight hours and the expected number of aircraft losses are calculated. The approach is through fracture mechanics where the distribution of flaws in the structure is represented and combined with the probability of stress exceedance. The computation will allow for structural inspections and rework. The listing of the computer routine and a sample problem to illustrate the method is included.
