Paged GIRS (Graph Information Retrieval System) Users Manual.

Abstract

The report describes the use of the paged version of an associative (content addressable) computer memory simulation called GIRS (Graph Information Retrieval System). GIRS provides a convenient and efficient technique for the dynamic insertion, retrieval, modification, and deletion of data in a data base. Pointer manipulation is convenient and paged GIRS is well adapted for concurrent operation on more than one graph and therefore will handle shared and distributed data bases. Users of a large data base could have their own unique description of common data which might be stored elsewhere. The paged version of GIRS allows for a wide range of flexibilities, in which, at a minimum, a user may leave any parameters to default. For maximum flexibility, however, a user may include a user-embedded strategy and hence may satisfy queries of various degrees of imprecision depending on the inferential search technique used. The implementation described here is FORTRAN for the PDP 11/45 computer system and is described in sufficient detail to allow conversion to another computer or alteration of the existing overlay structure.
