Honey Creek Watershed Project. Tillage Demonstration Results 1979.

Abstract

The Honey Creek Watershed Management Program is a pilot demonstration project. Its purpose is to demonstrate on agricultural lands practices designed primarily for the purpose of improving water quality (Best Management Practices or BMP's. It is to also demonstrate approaches or ways to get practices on the ground. Finally, it is to inform people about agricultural activities - water quality relationships and how they can help develop workable ways to carry out erosion or nutrient control practices (BMP's). With these goals in mind the Joint Board, with help from Cooperative Extension Service, Soil Conservation Service, and Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, and numerous farm service representatives, began working with farmers to carry out BMP's. Engineering practices such as grassed waterways and erosion control structures were planned as well as numerous plots demonstrating reduced tillage and no-till methods. This publication reports results of 1979 tillage demonstration plots within the Honey Creek watershed. Plot histories from planting to harvest, economic data and soil erosion information are reported. The publication is not a research document, rather a compilation of data and information gathered while working with landowners to perform tillage demonstration practices. Main effort was 'hands on' demonstrations that people could see and judge. Plot results, too, represent data from one year only.
