An Evaluation of a Hemispheric Operational Wave Spectral Model

Abstract

Through the cooperative efforts of the Naval Oceanographic Office and Fleet Numerical Weather Central personnel, the open ocean Icosahedral-Gnomonic wave spectral computer model has been placed in real time operational use at FNWC under the title Spectral Ocean Wave Model (SOWM). The model computes semi- daily on-time analyses and forecasts to seventy two hours. A gnomonic projection allows great circles to be represented by straight lines within the icosahedral triangles, thus minimizing propagation errors. (Author)
