Effects of the Gulf Stream on Acoustic Propagation.

Abstract

This report investigates the effect of the Gulf Stream frontal system on acoustic propagation relative to tactical sonar systems (.1-20 HKZ). An oceanographic description of the Gulf Stream frontal system is included. Two ray models (MPP and GRASS) and one wave model (PE) were compared against measured acoustic data. The appendix contains ray plots and transmission loss estimated for many source/receiver geometries across the Gulf Stream. (Author)
