The Image Field Effect: How Important Is It?

Abstract

This paper reviews the current status of the image field effect model of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), including the comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental results, and attempts to improve the image model through the use of wavevector dependent dielectric constants, finite size dipoles and a continuous variation of the electron density at the interface.
