A Simplified Culture Method for Specific Diagnosis of Cerebrospinal Meningitis.

Abstract

A simplified culture system is described for isolation of bacteria from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens. The culture system consists of a two phase media system contained in a small bottle and can be adapted for general bacterial culture or for specific selection of meningococci. It was more efficient than chocolate agar and blood agar plates when tested in parallel on 460 cerebrospinal fluid specimens. The culture bottles are inexpensive, portable, and durable making them highly suited to studies in the field. (Author)
