Ethics and the Military Profession. The Professional Ethic

Abstract

In this issue we are concerned with whether or not there is a professional ethic for the military. Implicit in such a discussion is the very essence of the occupation. Is the professional model the correct one, or, as many sociologists report, are we drifting aimlessly towards a more occupational mode? Presently the military is between two modes likely to move in either direction depending on future decisions about benefits and unionization and the military's own introspection in regard to its ethos. Consequently, at the moment the military finds itself in a somewhat molten condition.
