Effective Elastic Properties of Cracked Materials.

Abstract

The problem of the determination of effective elastic properties of materials containing many interacting cracks has been considered by variational methods. It has been shown that effective elastic moduli expressions for low crack density are general upper bounds for the case of arbitrary crack density. Lower bounds on effective moduli have been obtained on the basis of admissible, stress fields which are expressed in terms of known crack field solutions. Upper and lower bounds are reasonably close together for practically significant range of crack density. (Author)
