Human Factors and Training Evaluation of the Improved Tow Vehicle (ITV) During OT/DT 3

Abstract

This TRADOC System manager (TSM) for the Improved TOW Vehicle (ITV) asked ARI assistance in assessing human factors and training during the operational and developmental testing (OT/DT III) of the ITV. This report details this technical advisory service effort. The intent was to provide TSM with quantified information on human factors and training problems to aid in making equipment and/or training modifications before ITV system was fielded. Questionnaires, interviews, and field observations were used to obtain information form test soldiers, personnel playing the role of the threat force and from project personnel. The ITV was judged to be good in concept but to be lacking in durability and reliability throughout OT/DT III. It was also judged to have problems keeping up with other vehicles and to be somewhat slow getting into or out of action. Boresighting was a problem. Command and control problems were evident at the squad leader's station. Many recommendations to improve the vehicle and training to operate it were made. Many of these recommendations have already been heeded and major improvements have been implemented.
