Guide to Common Shipboard Expendable Bathythermograph (SXBT) Recording Malfunctions

Abstract

The Sippican SXBT system is a reliable method of measuring temperatures in the upper few hundred meters of the ocean while underway. The system provides information on local temperature distribution and sonic conditions which assists the Navy in tactical decision making. This guide has been prepared to aid the system operator in discerning good data from bad data. It describes erroneous SXBT traces and simple methods to be employed for rectifying the more common problems which may occur with this equipment.
