Prediction of Energetic Particle Disturbances.

Abstract

The Working Group on Energetic Particle Disturbance Prediction evaluated the present status of our capabilities to predict energetic particle disturbances in space and developed a series of findings and recommendations. These recommendations, if implemented, promise to significantly increase the accuracy of existing forecasting techniques for the prediction of solar particle fluxes near the earth and to allow the development of predictive techniques for forecasting magnetospheric particle disturbances - a field which, at the present time, totally lacks operational short term forecasting capability. This report is structured to emphasize our findings and recommendations. The interested reader will find additional relevant background material in the Appendices attached to the Working Group report. We have also included a selected list of references, many of which can be found in these Proceedings. These references may illuminate various aspects of the state of the art of energetic particle disturbance predictions or serve as authoritative reviews of work in this field.
