Synthesis of Energetic Monomers and Polymers

Abstract

The synthesis of the following energetic monomers was investigated: 2,2,2-Fluorodinitroethoxyoxirane, beta-fluorodinitromethylcaprolactone; glycidyl bis(fluorodinitroethyl)amine. The reaction of fluorodinitromethyl and nitro- substituted diols with formaldehyde and sulfuric acid was studied, and substituent effects on cyclic vs. polyformal formation were elucidated. Efforts to polymerize bis(fluorodinitromethyl)dioxepane and bis(fluorodinitromethyl) dioxocane were mostly unsuccessful.
