Artillery Systems Engineering Study (Concept Team Final Report)
Abstract
An engineering study is undertaken to depict large caliber battery weapon concepts for battlefield employment within the next 10 years. Among the self-propelled systems proposed are casemate, turreted, and enhanced M109A2 designs and two foreign systems. Included are companion vehicles for ammunition resupply and battery fire control. Ammunition concepts included scatterable mines, fire-and-forget cannon-launched guided projectiles, and extended range. In addition, numerous special subjects such as antitank projectiles, reliability availability and maintainability considerations, alternate ammunition handling concepts, weapon stability at high rates of fire, communication and data transmission requirements, and reduction of delivery error are discussed.
