Free Radicals Produced in TATB by UV Irradiation.

Abstract

TATB exposed to ultraviolet irradiation gradually darkens from yellow to black. Using electron spin resonance spectroscopy, we found that free radical formation accompanies the discoloration, and that the UY-generated radicals are stable to temperatures of ca. 220C. Treatment of irradiated TATB with dimethylsulfoxide yielded a soluble free radical, identified from its hyper-fine structure as a hydrogen atom adduct of TATB. (Author)
