Evaluation of St. Louis LDA/DME Runway 12L Approach.

Abstract

Arrival delays at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, MO, prompted Washington Headquarters to authorize an evaluation of a new approach concept using an offset localizer for an LDA/DME approach to runway 12L. The localizer was installed as proposed and flight tests flown in several different aircraft. Flight tracks of the approaches were studied, along with inflight data recorded by video cameras and tape recorders. Original figures on the approach plate were changed to more realistics numbers due to additional knowledge introduced by Ozark Airlines with the aid of their DC-9 simulator. Math model figures calculated by AFO-560 supported these figures. The evaluation of the proposed approach concept found it to be safe, flyable, and acceptable to pilots.
