Filestore Management under the George 3 Operating System.

Abstract

This memorandum describes a new method for controlling the filestore under the George 3 operating system on the ICL 1906S computer at RSRE. The introduction outlines the two major activities to be carried out by a filestore management system. There is a description of the system provided by ICL and a discussion as to why this was inadequate for the particular requirements at RSRE. New ideas are put forward and the implementation of these ideas is described. Next the actual algorithm, together with the program for implementing the algorithm and the job running the new system, is described in detail. The improvements experienced using the new system are summarized.
