An Improved Expedient Propellant Charge to Obtain High Muzzle Velocity in a 20-MM Experimental Gun

Abstract

The Ballistic Research Laboratory funded the TSD-SCTB-SCDTS, ARRADCOM to conduct terminal ballistic test at velocities of 1520 m/s (5000 ft/s). The gun system, a 20-mm smooth bore/30-mm breech and IMR 4996 propellant, launched tungsten alloy penetrators successfully. However, the depleted uranium rods experienced severe deformation and fracture during launch. This report describes a suitable propelling charge that can be used to successfully launch DU long rod penetrators at 1520 m/s.
