Subpopulation Differences in Performance on Tests of Mental Ability: Historical Review and Annotated Bibliography

Abstract

This paper presents a review of subpopulation differences in performance on tests of mental ability. Six categories of subpopulation differences are examined; sex, age, race, ethnic, social class, and other (including education, geographical location, and physical characteristics). Selected references (40) are briefly described in an annotated bibliography in order to: (a) acquaint the reader with the so-called 'classic' works and a representative sample of studies in the field; (b) characterize the literature dealing with controversial aspects of group differences and intelligence testing; and (c) provide a general 'road map' for those who wish to pursue further the subject of the paper. It should be noted that no attempt is made to present, explain, or analyze the possible causes of the observed differences. However, theinterested reader can find references to several recent books on causative factors in the annotated bibliography and supplementary notes.
