Morphology and History of Spinal Ligaments from Three Primates.
Abstract
This report covers a study of the histological and morphological features of four spinal ligaments. Gross and microscopic characteristics of the anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments, ligamentum flavum and supraspinous ligaments were observed at varying vertebral levels and compared between rhesus monkey, baboon and chimpanzee. Information on the properties of the spinal ligaments is essential to understanding the mechanism of spinal injuries observed in aircrewmen under emergency egress from aircraft as well as under routine high performance flight conditions. Knowledge about the different primate species will aid in the selection of animal models for human injury testing and interspecies scaling techniques. (Author)
