Materials Evaluation in the Tri-Service Thermal Radiation Test Facility.

Abstract

The Tri-Services Thermal Nuclear Flash Test Facility for investigating the effects of thermal radiation on materials was established. The capability for irradiating specimens to intense thermal radiation, including the effects of aerodynamic loads or mechanical loads is operational. Seven thousand six hundred forty-one (7,641) tests were conducted for the Tri-Service community at this time. A large number of additional tests are scheduled during the next 12 months; additional improvements to the Facility are planned, with an emphasis on heat flux calibration techniques and on photographing specimen deterioration during the exposure to intense radiation heating.
