Hierarchical Finite Element Approaches Error Estimates and Adaptive Refinement,

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the identification of the discretization error in finite element solution and the definition of optimal refinement processes. The advantages and limitations of the hierarchical approach will be discussed and it will be shown how the intelligent enrichment of the finite element grid can be left to the computer if a capacity for a-posteriori error estimation exists within the finite element code.
