Automatic Extraction of Linear Features from Aerial Photographs.

Abstract

A procedure for the automatic extraction of roads from aerial images has been implemented on a DEC VAX 11/780 computer. The main parts of the procedure, i.e. the method for recognition of starting points on roads and two complementary methods for extraction of roads, are described. Modifications for extracting other line shaped objects, i.e. rivers and highways, are explained. A detailed documentation of the test results in different aerial images is presented. An assessment of the results as well as of the potential and the limitations of the procedure conclude this report.
