Validation of the Standard Ship Motion Program, SMP: Ship Motion Transfer Function Prediction

Abstract

A newly revised ship motion computer program has been developed for Navy-wide use, which incorporates the state-of-the-art prediction techniques. Validation of the calculated six-degree-of-freedom responses is essential to substantiate the accuracy of the program as well as to establish its value as a practical prediction tool. Measured and analytical transfer function data are compared for two Navy ships. Although overall good agreement is found between experiment and theory, future comparisons of a wider range of ship configurations will be required. The nonlinear characteristics of roll are also investigated in this report. Comparison of experiment and theory demonstrates improved prediction of roll at resonance. (Author)
