National Dam Safety Program. Loch Linden Dam (Inventory Number VA 18712) Shenandoah River Basin. Warren County, Commonwealth of Virginia. Phase I Inspection Report.

Abstract

Loch Linden Dam is an earthfill embankment approximately 49.4 feet high and 155 feet long. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for initial review of spillway adequacy, the 1/2 PMF was selected as the spillway design flood (SDF). The spillway is capable of passing up to 94 percent of the SDF or 47 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the dam. Overtopping velocities are not considered to be seriously detrimental to the embankment. The spillway is adjudged as inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. The saturate area on both sides of the outlet pipe should be regraded to permit better surface drainage. This area should be examined on a regular basis and after periods of heavy rainfall for increased flows or turbidity. If increased flows or turbidity are noted, a qualified geotechnical engineering firm should be retained to further evaluate the condition.
